Registrar Training
At Andrew Place Clinic, we are proud to be a training practice committed to supporting the next generation of General Practitioners. We have been taking registrars for over 30 years, offering them valuable experience in a welcoming, team-based environment, with exposure to a wide range of clinical presentations and patient groups.

Our Supervisors
Our supervisors work across both training sites and bring a diverse range of skills and teaching experience:
Dr Melanie Hemsley
Is an experienced medical educator with a special interest in women’s health. She serves on the Board of Examiners for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRANZCOG diploma exams) and has also taught first-year medical students at the University of Melbourne. She holds a certificate in sexual and reproductive health and is an accredited IUD inserter.
Dr Lisa Mifsud
Has been a supervisor since 2016 and is a senior local medical educator with the RACGP. She was formerly the GPT1 Eastern Victoria GP training coordinator, has served on the RACGP selection panel for new registrars and is a former RACGP examiner. She has clinical experience at the Melbourne Sexual Health Clinic and is a trained IUD inserter, shared antenatal care and CBTi provider.
Dr Christina Illing
Is an associate of the practice and past registrar (2012–2014). She has been a supervisor since 2014. She brings first-hand understanding of registrar learning needs and the challenges of transitioning into general practice. She enjoys providing quality wholistic care to her patients and assisting others to do the same. She also has expertise in women’s health and is an IUD inserter.
Dr Eric Tay
With over 30 years of GP experience and 20 years supervising registrars, he has a broad interest in family medicine, skin lesion removal, complex patient care, and mental health. His focus is on developing sustainable general practice, and he enjoys supporting doctors to grow alongside their patients.
Dr Melissa Cairns
Has been a supervisor since 2021. She is passionate about providing high-quality, comprehensive care to the community while helping to train future GPs.
Dr Tristan Barnes
Has a special interest in sports and lifestyle medicine. He is an active member of Sports Medicine Victoria (SMA) and brings enthusiasm for registrar teaching.
Dr Michaela Cuschieri
Is a recently fellowed GP bringing firsthand experience of the AGPT program. She has strong interests in chronic disease management, sexual health and mental health. With a commitment to patient-centred care, She is passionate about mentoring future GPs to develop compassionate, evidence-based practice.
Dr Cherry Liang
Is a recently fellowed GP, Cherry brings current clinical knowledge and a strong understanding of the registrar training journey to her teaching and she is committed to supporting registrars through their journey.
Training Experience at Andrew Place Clinic
Regular teaching sessions with supervisors, including FRACGP exam preparation support. Teaching sessions are also offered to GPT4 registrars.
Diverse case mix and demographic ranging from newborns to older adults.
A supportive, team-based environment where registrars are encouraged to learn and develop independence
Workload
One evening per week until 8pm
One Saturday morning session in every four
No overnight or on-call work
