Cervical Screening Self-Collection: A Gentle and Effective Option

Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. For eligible patients, self-collection offers a safe, accurate and less invasive option — helping more people stay up to date with screening. It’s your choice!

What is cervical screening?

Cervical screening tests for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes most cervical cancers. Detecting HPV early allows changes to be monitored or treated before cancer develops.

What is self-collection?

Self-collection allows you to collect your own vaginal sample using a swab, in the privacy of the clinic. It:

  • Is clinically accurate
  • Does not involve a speculum
  • Can feel more comfortable for many people

Your GP will confirm if you are eligible and guide you through the process. The choice is yours if you would like to proceed with a self-collected or GP collected screening test. Your GP can talk you through your options.

Who may benefit from self-collection?

Self-collection may be especially helpful if you:

  • Feel anxious about speculum exams
  • Have had previous discomfort or trauma
  • Have avoided screening in the past

Ongoing protection

Self-collection is just as effective as clinician-collected samples for detecting HPV. Regular screening — every five years — remains one of the best ways to protect your long-term health.

At Andrew Place Clinic, we aim to make cervical screening accessible, respectful and empowering.
